March 17, 2012
Dear readers – I received this lovely email from Jess, who is headed this was from New Zealand on holiday, and she wants some tips on what to do as a visitor to our lovely part of the world.
Please leave all your tips in the comment zone!
My boyfriend and I are coming to Newcastle County Down for the Easter long weekend; I was wondering, other than the Mourne Mountain, what else would you recommend to fill our time there?I am from New Zealand and love the great outdoors. I understand the harbour is beautiful, are there fishing shops/boats for hire? Or locals which take tourists out fishing?Which restaurants/pubs would you recommend? Thanks for your timeI am very excited to visit, it will be my first time in Ireland!

Anchor on Tuesday night, Mackens on Weds, Harbour on Sunday.
OK, so basically we have four suggestions for the pub!
C’mon people – anything else to do in Newcastle over Easter?
1. Take a walk from the Downs Road car park and go off to Dundrum Bay Bring a good digital camera and just admire the view.
2. Go to the Donard Park and follow the Glen River to the top of the Donard Mountain it will take them about 2-2.5 hours.on the way back call into the Harbour Inn( The Cod & Chips) are lovely and the staff are exceptionally friendly. or go across the road to the Deli and try the Baked Potato. The food here is always very competitve and tasty..
3. If they have plenty of time.,when they come out of either the Harbour Inn or the Deli, then go to Widows, Row and walk along King Street.Take pew and rest yourself and look over the Quay,, Now you can do either of two things from here, Look behind you and take the walk up the Mountains along thet path there.(I forget the name) or just keep on going along King Street.
4.Visit the Royal County Down Club.
5. Take a walk up and along the Wild Forest lane as you come from Newcastle and turn left passed the 2nd house( House was built in 1670 I think) We stay here a lot and the family cannot do enough for you( Cathy Mc Dowell) foloow the lane upto the Tullymore Forest Park.
6/ Visit Tulllymore Forest Park and that will take about 1 week.
7/ Visit Maghera Church of Ireland church in Maghera.,
8/ Visit both Churches in Bryansford.
9/ I could go on and on and on
Thanks everyone! Sounds lovely, cannot wait to come over & meet the boyfriend’s family too! Can anyone enlighten me with regards to the fishing?
Jess, with regards to fishing, I am aware of only one local boat for hire out of Newcastle. Details here: http://newcastleboattrips.com/
You could also ask at the Yacht Club at the harbour.
Otherwise, for fishing permits, equipment, bait (and further information), call in at Four Seasons shop on Main Street (+44 (0)28 4372 5078)
